The benefits of learning Spanish

Learning Spanish as a traveller can be incredibly beneficial for a number of reasons. For one, it greatly improves communication. Spanish is widely spoken in many countries, including Spain, Latin America, and even parts of the United States. This means that if you are able to speak the language, you will have an easier time communicating with locals and navigating unfamiliar places.

Additionally, knowing Spanish can give you a deeper understanding of the culture and customs of the countries you visit. This can lead to more authentic and enjoyable travel experiences. And don't underestimate the power of knowing the local language in emergency situations, as it can make it easier to ask for help or directions. So, learning Spanish can greatly enhance your travel experiences and make your time abroad much more enjoyable!

Learning while you're there vs. learning before you go

There are benefits to learning a language while travelling like:

  • Learning a language in context, where you are immersed in the language and culture, can be a more effective way of learning. You can practise all day and every day!
  • It allows you to pick up conversational expressions and local dialects that you probably won't learn in a traditional classroom setting at home, or in language apps.
  • Travelling and learning a language at the same time can be a fun and exciting way to experience a new culture and make new connections, with both locals and other students.

On the other hand, learning a language before embarking on your journey also has its advantages:

  • It allows you to communicate more effectively with locals from day 1, which might make your travel experience in Latin America a bit easier.
  • You will be able to find your way in any Spanish-speaking country right from the get-go.
  • You will have a greater sense of independence and autonomy while travelling, as you don't need to spend time in the classroom during your journey.

Some people may find that learning a language before travelling gives them a greater sense of confidence and independence, as they are able to communicate more effectively with locals and navigate their destination with ease. Additionally, having a solid foundation in the language before travelling can make it easier to pick up new vocabulary and grammar while on the trip.

On the other hand, a lot of us don't have the time or motivation to learn Spanish while also juggling studying and working. If you're like that, you'll probably agree that learning a language while travelling is more effective, as you're able to learn in context, easily picking up expressions and local dialects that aren't covered in a traditional classroom setting. Additionally, being immersed in the language and culture with fellow passionate travellers makes the learning experience even more fun.
