Remember that this is just a suggestion and that you can tailor this trip to your need. You start this adventure off in sunny Cape Town before heading out on the open road. You’re of course free to select the stops you want – but we recommend that you stop by all the top stops on the Garden Route. Keep reading to find out more about all the stops!
Start this adventure off by spending 3 days exploring the youthful city of Cape Town - we have arranged your accommodation. A must see is the view from Table Mountain, but make sure to check out the weather forecast before heading up to Table Mountain, you might not think it's worth the trip up if the visibility is bad because of fog. If the weather is on your side though, you should experience the sunset on Table Mountain (It’s challenging and fun to hike up/run up Table Mountain and then take the cable cart down).
Maybe plan a visit to the famous Robben Island too? The place is full of history! Make sure to book your tour well in advance as ferry tickets including a guided tour sells out fast.
You should consider enjoying a couple glasses of local wine on a guided wine tour while you're in cape Town! Remember: Don't drink and drive! A guided wine tour is much more fun, especially after wine farm number two. The drivers will select 3-4 very different wine farms in terms of set up, scenery & nice viewing points and flavors. We can guarantee that you’ll have made some new friends by the end of the tour to have a fun night out with!
Jump in your rental car and depart for new adventures along the coast! Stop by Cape Point, where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic. We recommend a trip to the lighthouse if you want the best views. After a little visit here, you could continue to Simonstown and Boulder Beach, where you can meet the weird and wonderful cape-penguins.
Hermanus is about a 2 hours drive from Cape Town and it's is THE place for spotting (southern right) whales (seasonal June – November) calving their young. You can witness this beautiful sight on a boat trip, but sometimes you can even spot them from the coast! You can also see other marine life like seals, dolphins and the town a really cool place for place for hiking & kayaking!
Visit Oudtshoorn located in a semi desert landscape where they locals breed ostriches, hence the name ostrich capital of the world. Also check out the cooler Cango Caves which has an extensive system of chambers & tunnels of limestone. Here you can also witness cave paintings of the indigenous San people!
Ready for some more adrenaline? If you continue along the Garden Route you’ll come to the charming laidback town of Knysna. The laidback atmosphere here is in stark contrast to the feeling you’ll have when you throw yourself off the Bloukrans Bridge – the world’s tallest bungee jump!
Tsitsikamma Wilderness is a beautiful area for (multi) day hiking, snorkeling & diving, kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, spotting wildlife.
This is yet another cute coastal town, that just goes by the nickname “J-Bay”. This place is ranked on the world’s top ten surf spots, so if you’re into surfing – this is the pace for you! It’ also a sunshine paradise where you’ll get to see dolphins and find cool surf shacks on every streetcorner. Chill at the beach with a Sundowner watching the surf pro’s play, go shopping in one of the many surfs outlet stores...
Top your roadtrip off with an extensive safari through Addo Elephant Park where many (600) elephants roam the park as well as zebra, giraffe, cape buffalo, lion, hyena, warthogs, and the elusive leopard! Book a safari in an open vehicle where an experienced local guide will show you what this beautiful park has on offer for you.
You’re nearing the end of this road trip and the final stop: Port Elizabeth is also known as "the friendly town". This is the place to be if you enjoy diving or if you want to test out some sandboarding! The biggest highlight in Port Elizabeth is the Addo Elephant National Park, located about 40 minutes outside of the city.

Johannesburg, or Jo'burg as the locals call it, is a city full of life and history. Start your visit at the Apartheid Museum to get a better understanding of South Africa's past. For a different kind of adventure, head to Gold Reef City, a theme park built on an old gold mine. If you're into art, the Maboneng Precinct is the place to be with its galleries, cafes, and street art. Don't miss a trip to the Soweto Township for a guided tour to see the famous Vilakazi Street, where Nelson Mandela once lived. There's always something to do and discover in Jo'burg.
Pilanesberg National Park is a great spot for a safari adventure. Located just a couple of hours from Johannesburg, it's perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The park is home to the Big Five—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo—so you're in for some amazing wildlife sightings. Don't miss the chance to see animals gathering at the park's many waterholes, especially during the early morning or late afternoon. After a day of exploring, relax at your campsite inside the park. It's a fantastic way to experience the wild beauty of South Africa.
