This itinerary is just a suggestion and can be customised to suit your unique travel plans. Make it longer, make it shorter. Add in the things you want to do. Get in touch with our travel experts to turn this itinerary into your dream trip around Australia.
Start your adventure in the capital of Western Australia, considered to be one of the world's most isolated big cities. For you that means fewer tourists and more cool, cultural experiences, which is what backpacking is all about, right?
You'll also get to experience a unique stay at Fremantle Prison, built in the 1850s. We've included two nights here which should be enough for you to explore the city on your own. But you can, of course, choose to stay longer.
In Perth you can enjoy wine, art and beautiful rivers. If we were you we would also take a trip to Rottnest Island where you'll find incredible nature and beaches.
Next it's time to head out on the highway. Pick up your campervan for a two-week road trip to explore national parks, sandy beaches, small towns and amazing food along the west coast of Australia. If you get excited about traveling 'off the beaten track', you'll absolutely love this. Spectacular nature in Kalabarri National Park, the marine life at Ningaloo Reef, Eighty Mile Beach and the charming little town of Broome are just a few highlights awaiting you.
At the end of your two weeks, drop the campervan back off at Perth airport and jump on a plane for an included flight to Adelaide for the next leg of your Aussie adventure.
In Adelaide you'll meet the fun, young group you'll be travelling with through Australia's Red Centre all the way north to Darwin. Along the way on this 18-day adventure you'll witness the stunning natural beauty of Uluru, Kings Canyon, and Coober Pedy, and explore the wild wonders of Kakadu and Litchfield with the added treat of camping under the stars.
After ending in Darwin you'll say goodbye to your new friends and board a plane bound for Cairns to start your journey down Australia's popular east coast.
Next stop is Cairns where you've got three nights in a really cool party hostel. In Cairns you'll get to experience the Great Barrier Reef and all its marine wonders on a day tour that takes you to two different snorkel spots, each with an extraordinary array of marine life and coral species. If you're lucky you might spot a sea turtle along with eagle rays, giant clams and starfish. This is definitely a highlight of the trip!
For the rest of your trip, you'll be travelling by bus to keep costs down. We've included a 30-day Greyhound bus pass that takes you comfortably all the way from Cairns to Melbourne with several incredible stops along the way.
Your east coast adventure continues with a 2-day stop at the magical Whitsundays Islands, which you get to experience with a group of other backpackers. Board a sailboat where you'll spend the next two days at sea snorkelling at Caves Cove and visiting Whitehaven Beach, known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world (true story !).
All meals are freshly prepared onboard and you'll spend the days living your best life while cruising on the Coral Sea.
K'gari (also known as Fraser Island) equals lots of adventures! Explore the world’s largest dune island in a 4WD. You'll travel for 3 days together with other like-minded travellers with a night's pre and post tour accommodation in Noosa.
During the 3-day tour you'll get to drive around the island visiting stunning Rainbow Beach, Hook Point and Lake McKenzie, famous for its blue water and white beaches. You'll also visit Eli Creek, the largest freshwater creek on the eastern coast of the island, and the popular swimming hole Champagne Pools.
Your next stop along Australia's east coast is the secretive Spot X where'll you'll spend five days learning to surf. Here you'll meet other backpackers and get to enjoy the Aussie lifestyle at the beach. A typical day starts with breakfast at 07:00 followed by a 2-hour surf lesson. In the afternoon you're free to play beach volleyball, cricket, football or just kick-back and relax in a hammock or at the beach. We can say with some certainty that after a few days here you will have made new friends and learned how to master the waves like a pro!
Continue down the coast by bus to Sydney - one of Australia's most popular cities. With good reason! You've got three nights' hostel accommodation here, which gives you plenty of time to explore the iconic city sights, including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
Your Aussie adventure ends with three nights' at a hostel in Melbourne. This vibrant city has plenty to keep you entertained for a few days with an excellent cafe and foodie scene, plus plenty of opportunities to catch a local Aussie Rules or cricket game.
We've included return flights back to the UK from Melbourne. But if you'd rather continue your adventure Down Under by hopping over to Fiji or New Zealand (or why not both?!) then let us know and we can pack your trip with even more awesome experiences.
