Itinerary

11 Day Northern Sumatra Extension with Ketambe Trekking

Day 1: Airport - Medan

Upon arrival in Kuala Namu airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of your day is free.

Travel time: Approximately 1.5 hours

Day 2: Medan - Ketambe

Today you will go from Medan to Ketambe. Along the way, you will enjoy the cool mountainous air of Ketambe and upon entering Medan area, the view small villages around the palmoil plantation and friendly local will welcome you. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

Travel time: Approximately 8 hours

Day 3: Jungle Trek - Overnight Jungle Camp

Today you walk 6-7 hours into the Gunung Leuser National Park, searching for orangutans and other Sumatran wildlife. It is not always a flat walk, but involves some up and down hikes. A bit hard but in return you get a very nice experience. You have big chances to see orangutans, gibbons, Thomas Leaf monkeys, longtail and pigtail macagues, flying squirrels, Sumatra peacocks, and hornbills. A wild orangutans might even cross your way. (However, as with any wildlife, no guarantees can be made that they are around this area during your visit) .Your guide will explain you many things about the rainforest, and will show you many different kind of plants and flowers. Aimple packed lunch on the trails will be provided. You camp at a peaceful place in the park near the river. Take a refreshing dip in the river whilst your guide prepare your jungle dinner.

What to bring
Ketambe Jungle Trekking - 3 Day/2 Night
Daypack (be ready for the rain: take a drybag), mosquito repellent, long pants (light), long shirt or T-shirt, closed shoes, hat or bandana, toilet paper, rain coat, medical kit and prescriptions, sunglasses, binoculars (if you have some).

Day 4: Jungle Trek - Overnight Jungle Camp

In the morning, you might be woken up by the magical sound of the jungle. Breakfast at campsite. Continue trekking 6-7 hours deeper into the park, stopping regularly for wildlife spotting opportunities and amazing viewpoints. You will walk downhill to the waterfall. Packed lunch provided on trails. Camping will be at other peaceful place in the jungle next to the hotspring. Take a warm shower in the hotspring whilst the guide builds the camp.

Note: Those who want to get more chances to see Sumatra wildlife can take another route (route that brings you deeper in the park), but no sighting of waterfall. You can discuss this with your guide before the trekking starts.

Day 5: Jungle Trek Ends - Ketambe

Breakfast at camp. Today is the final trek of your rainforest adventure. You will walk another 6-7 hours in the park searching for tropical flora and fauna. Then return to Ketambe for overnight.

Day 6: Ketambe - Berastagi

Today you will go from Ketambe to Berastagi. Along the way, enjoy the small villages and scenery. Approaching Berastagi, you will feel the cool air refreshing you after a long drive. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

Day 7: Berastagi - Climb to Sibayak - Lake Toba

Today you will go from Berastagi to Parapat (Harbor). On the way, enjoy the cool mountainous air of Berastagi and upon entering Parapat (Harbor) area, enjoy the view of Lake Toba from above as you slowly drive to the harbour. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

You will be picked up from your hotel and will take a journey for around half hour to the starting point of the climb up to Sibayak. It is recommended to start early as you have more chance for an open sky without too many clouds. Start walking, following a broad and steep road. You will be surrounded by forest and often hear the calling of the black siamangs & gibbons. After a short while, the path gets narrow and you find yourself surrounded by mountain vegetation. The last part of the path will take you through rocks until you reach the edge of crater where you can see sulfur puffing from vents. Views are breathtaking! To return you can choose to go back the same way or return on the other side of the mountain following staircases (in a bad condition) all the way down. Before taking you back to your hotel, you can visit and swim in the Rajaberneh/Sidebuk Hotsprings debuk which great to soak your sore muscles.

(Starting at 06:00, this program will take around 5 hours, including a two hour hike up to the top of Gunung Sibayak. Several beautiful trails will lead to the crater rim. Take a short rest at the top before going down a different, but more challenging, trail. When you arrive at the bottom, you can go for a soak and some swimming in the hot springs before heading back to the hotel.)

Shoes with good soles, raincoat & dry bag for a wallet, mobile to protect from waters/rains, camera, bottled water, and bathing suit (for hot springs if time permits you can visit hot springs)

Day 8: Lake Toba, Cycling Tour

After breakfast, start exploring Samosir Island by bike to see the activities of local people such as visiting children at a school, visiting a village where locals make traditional hand weaving and other activities.

Please note the bicycles are from rental shops on Samosir Island, and are not insured. Any loss or damage will be at your own risk.

Day 9: Lake Toba, Free Day

The day is free for you to explore on your own.

Day 10: Lake Toba - Medan

Today you will go from Parapat (Harbour) to Medan. Along the way, you will drive past winding road with the view of Samosir Lake before entering the hustle and bustle of the city of Medan. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

Pedicab Tour in Medan: Breakfast at hotel. Pick up at hotel and drive to Deli Tua Market. Enroute, stop to take pictures of the rice fields. Arrive at the market and walk in the street market where you can talk to the sellers of fish, vegetable and fruit. In the market, you can also see the process of making pancakes, which are being sold at any time of the day. The market is very colorful since all fresh vegetables, fruit, and fish are available. Drive to the home industry at Pak Anwar’s house. Here you can see and learn how the local snacks and cakes are made. Return back to the hotel.

Day 11: Medan - Departure

You will be picked up from your hotel and will be transferred to Kualanamu International Airport. This is a transfer only, no stops included.
