Start your gap year adventure with a tour of Buenos Aires - the sultry capital of Argentina. On a semi-independent 17-day tour you'll head next to Iguazu Falls on the border with Brazil. Spend a full day and a half exploring the different walkways and admiring the impressive cascades from all angles.

Continue to Salta for scenic excursions to Purmamarca and Humahuaca visiting magnificent ruins, charming villages and amazing landscapes. The next stop is Mendoza, famed for its vineyards and wines. Take a winery tour to learn about the history of viticulture in Argentina and sample a few glasses along the way. You'll also spend a day exploring the Aconcagua Valley to view the majestic mountain range and visit pre-Hispanic settlements.

Return to Buenos Aires to spend two weeks learning Spanish in group classes. With 20 hours of classes each week, you'll be speaking 'español' like a native before you know it! At night you'll be staying at a cool, downtown hostel with organised activities each night, from bike tours to music shows and football games.

Then it's time to put your Spanish skills to use with a two-week volunteer project helping at a community-run soup kitchen. You'll be contributing to a centre that provides a free lunch to more than 100 people every day.

Buenos Aires Welcome to Argentina

Welcome to Argentina and the start of your gap year adventure!

On arrival into Buenos Airport, a shuttle transfer will take you to the city for check-in at your accommodation. For the next 17 days you'll be on a semi-independent tour with accommodation, transport and activities all included. This kicks off with a half-day tour of the city.

You'll see important buildings including the National Congress, the Metropolitan Cathedral and Government House. You'll also pass Colon Theater, one of the most important opera houses in Latin America, and San Telmo, a traditional neighbourhood where Tango performances can be seen in many bars and restaurants.

There is a stop at the colourful neighbourhood of La Boca, attractive Palermo, and exclusive La Recoleta where the famous cemetery is found.

After a day at leisure to explore the city further, take an overnight bus to Puerto Iguazu.

Iguazu Falls to Salta Waterfalls and fortresses

Enjoy an afternoon to relax after your overnight bus journey before joining a full-day tour of the Argentine side of the Iguazú National Park.

You'll visit the local museum, follow the lower trail to see the Two Sisters Falls and Bossetti Fall, and walk the upper trail to the majestic San Martin Fall. To finish the day you'll jump on the Train of the Jungle up to Devil's Throat station and walk along the catwalks to reach the spectacular Devil's Throat, where the Iguazu river expresses itself with all its strength and the falling water gives the illusion of magic rainbows.

The next day you'll visit the Brazilian side, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Argentine side and get close to Floriano, Deodoro and Benjamin waterfalls, as well as Santa Maria Falls.

Leaving Puerto Iguazu, another night bus takes you to Salta where you'll enjoy two full-day excursions to Purmamarca and Humahuaca. Travel the same route as the famous 'Train to the Clouds' zigzagging on lonely roads between the blue sky and the Puna. Visit magnificent ruins, charming villages and spectacular landscapes including the pre-Inca city of Santa Rosa de Tastil, the Pucará fortress, and the Seven Colour Hill.

Mendoza back to Buenos Aires Vineyards and Tango

There's time to explore the city of Salta at leisure before boarding the overnight bus to Mendoza - famous for its vineyards and mountainous backdrops. In Mendoza you'll visit two wineries - one with traditional organic methods and the other that uses the latest available technology. Learn all about the process while sampling a few different grapes.

Then take a day tour of the Aconcagua Valley to see the majestic Cordon del Plata mountain range, the Potrerillos dam, and the pre-Hispanic settlement Uspallata. Other highlights include a huge natural bridge with hot springs and the viewpoint of Cerro Aconcagua.

Enjoy a free day in Mendoza before boarding one final night bus back to Buenos Aires. Here you'll enjoy a Tango show with dinner and professional artists displaying their best art, singing songs and dancing typical pieces.

Buenos Aires Two weeks of Spanish classes

For the next two weeks you'll join a Spanish course in the heart of Buenos Aires. These fun, dynamic group classes will have you speaking Spanish in no time!

Aside from class-based lessons, you'll also have the opportunity to go out once a week with a Spanish language instructor to put your new vocabulary into practice, visiting markets and cafes and other places where you'll need to use the language "in real life".

There are 4 hours of lessons daily (in two blocks: morning/afternoon) five days a week with up to 7 students in the class. Classes will cover grammar, vocabulary, socio-cultural content and phonetics.

You'll be staying at Milhouse Avenue Hostel in Buenos Aires in a 6-bed dorm with a private bathroom, or alternatively you can choose to upgrade and stay in a private room. Located in the core of downtown Buenos Aires, this sociable hostel occupies a stunning, five-storey 19th century house, built around a charming, colonial-style atrium.

The hostel also provides organised entertainment every day and night of the week - from bike tours and music shows, to tickets to all the football games and the most exclusive clubs in Buenos Aires. It's the perfect place to let your hair down and make great friends from all over the world.

Buenos Aires Volunteer at a soup kitchen

With some basic Spanish knowledge you'll be well placed to start the final part of your gap year program - a two-week volunteer project at a community soup kitchen.

There are two soup kitchens we work with in Buenos Aires, one in La Boca and one in Barracas. But both provide a free lunch to over 100 people each day and also serve as a food bank to allow struggling families to take food home and prepare meals for their loved ones.

Volunteers generally work five days a week from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 14:00. It's a hands-on experience and you'll be preparing meals, serving meals and clearing up. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice your Spanish, learn about Argentinean food and make new friends.

You also have the option to add either 4-or 6-hours of Spanish lessons per week - one-on-one or in pairs, if you wish to advance your language skills further.

You'll be staying at the same hostel as your previous Spanish course with breakfast provided daily.

If you wish to volunteer for longer in Argentina, you can spend up to eight weeks helping at the community soup kitchen - just let us know your preference and we'll organise your program accordingly.

Once your volunteer project has come to an end, make your own way back to the airport for your return flight home to the UK.
