Java Island Jakarta to Malang

Welcome to Indonesia and the start of your gap year program!

To start your adventure, you'll be joining a 22-day small-group tour, travelling with other like-minded travellers to experience the best of what Java, Lombok, Bali and Gili Trawangan have to offer.

Starting in Jakarta - the country's capital city - you'll enjoy a guided city tour before taking the train to Indonesia's cultural hub. Yogyakarta is steeped in ancient ruins and culture, and you'll explore two UNESCO World Heritage Sites here - the Prambanan Hindu temple complex and Borobudur - the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world.

Then you'll challenge yourself with a pre-dawn trek to watch the sunrise over Mt. Bromo with time to explore the village of Ngadas in the agricultural heartland of Java. A short flight takes you to the next island to continue your adventure.

Bali Temples and Terraces

Enjoy a few nights at leisure in the seaside town of Sanur for your first taste of Bali. Spend the day at the beach and the evenings watching the beautiful sunsets.

Then it's time to explore some of Bali's most popular sights, starting with the picturesque Lake Danu Bratan Temple. You'll also take a walk through the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces and enjoy traditional Balinese cuisine.

Spend a night at Kintamani with a dip in the local hot springs. There's the option to rise early the next morning for a sunrise hike to the top of Mt Batur. Then it's onto Ubud to visit the historic Court of Royal Justice and choose from more optional activities.

Your final stop in Bali is Candi Dasa.

Lombok and Gili T Traditional villages and free time

A local ferry takes you to Lombok where you'll visit a traditional Sasak village and meet the locals. Drive through the middle of Lombok to visit the slopes of the Rinjani Volcano and enjoy a refreshing dip in a secluded waterfall.

The final stop of your group tour is Gili Trawangan with an included half-day snorkelling trip and plenty of free time to go bike riding or simply relax on the beach.

Return to Bali to say goodbye to your newly made friends and start the next chapter of your gap year program.

Nusa Penida Turtle conservation volunteering

For the next two weeks you'll be volunteering with the Turtle Conservation Project on the charming island of Nusa Penida, which is a 45-minute speedboat ride from mainland Bali.

Working alongside a local team, you'll be helping to protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia. Duties will include identifying turtle species, collecting eggs, monitoring nests or seeing hatchlings get safely to sea.

You'll be staying at the volunteer house, which includes shared bathrooms with hot water shower and western toilets. The air-conditioned rooms accommodate 4-6 other volunteers of the same gender. Three tasty Indonesian meals are provided each weekday with breakfast and dinner on weekends.

Nusa Penida is a stunning island and during your free time you'll have the opportunity to visit the iconic Kelingking Beach, the natural infinity pool of Angel's Billabong, the cascading pools of Peguyangan Waterfall and the cave temple of Goa Giri Putri.

We've included a two-week placement as part of this gap year program, but you can spend as much as eight weeks at the Turtle Conservation Project. Let us know your preference and we'll organise your program accordingly.

Once your time volunteering has come to an end, head back to Bali for your return flight home to the UK from Denpasar.
