Welcome to Sri Lanka and the start of your gap year volunteer program!
Arriving into Colombo, you'll kick off your adventure with a 14-day small-group tour to explore the highlights of the island. After a guided city tour of the capital, continue to the coastal city of Negombo to observe the local fishermen and glide along the Dutch canal by boat.
Situated in the centre of the island, Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle encompasses a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And you'll visit some of the most impressive of these sites over the next few days! Starting with the Dambulla cave temple and its five sanctuaries displaying Buddhist statues and colourful murals.
Next up is the iconic rock fortress of Sigiriya. It's a long walk up to the top, but well worth the physical effort as you'll be rewarded with incredible views over the surrounding green landscapes. There are also gardens, caves and palaces to explore.
Your final stop in the Cultural Triangle is the historic city of Kandy, where you'll visit the famed Temple of the Tooth.
Spend a night in the village of Digana where you'll enjoy a guided walk, visit a jewellery and incense maker, and learn to make Sri Lankan breads and sweets. Then continue to Nuwara Eliya to explore a traditional tea plantation in the central highlands and enjoy a proper cuppa!
With free time in Nuwara Eliya you can opt to explore the nature trails, go horseback riding, stroll the local markets, or hike in the Horton Plains Nature Reserve.
A scenic train ride takes you next to Ella where you'll have the option to tour the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, admire views of Ella Rock or hike Little Adam's Pea.
From Ella you'll travel to Yala National Park, home to the highest concentration of leopard in Sri Lanka. Enjoy an afternoon safari on the lookout for these elusive creatures with chances to spot wild Asian elephant, crocodiles, wild peacocks and various species of bird.
The final stop on your group tour is Mirissa - a laidback coastal town close to lovely beaches. While in Mirissa, take a day trip to Galle to tour the colonial city and historic fort. Enjoy a full day at leisure in Mirissa before saying goodbye to your travel buddies.
The next chapter of your gap year adventure will soon begin with a Culture Week back near the city of Kandy. Alongside the international group of volunteers that you'll be working with, you'll spend a week diving into the culture and traditions of Sri Lanka with language and cooking classes, temple visits, an Ayurvedic massage and a traditional Kandyan dance performance.
Once the week is up, you'll transfer to Ambalangoda by train to start your volunteer project.
Located just a few steps from the Indian Ocean, the Turtle Conservation Project in Ambalangoda is one of nine turtle conservation projects on the island and certified by the Sinhala government as Sri Lanka’s largest of its kind.
For the next two weeks you'll be getting hands-on with turtle conservation. Your daily duties will include cleaning of the turtles and their tanks, preparing food and feeding the turtles, clearing plastic from the local beach, releasing newborn turtles into the ocean, and night patrol.
During your time volunteering, you'll be staying at the accommodation centre in basic, dorm-style rooms with fans. Three meals will be provided during the weekdays and you'll be free on the weekends to explore the local area with two meals (breakfast and dinner) provided.
If you wish to volunteer for longer in Sri Lanka, you can spend up to four weeks at the Turtle Conservation Centre - just let us know your preference and we'll organise your program accordingly.
Otherwise, once your two weeks are up, head back to Colombo for your return flight to the UK.
