What else you need to budget for this trip

This gap year itinerary includes can't-do-yourself experiences with the opportunity to travel independently at your own pace down the East Coast of Australia before finding work in Sydney.

We recommend an additional budget of £1,500 to cover this part of your work and travel trip, which should cover meals, activities and some extra accommodation in case you want to spend more than 10 nights travelling between Cairns and Sydney.

When it comes to budgeting for your Australia gap year, bear in mind that you'll need proof of around £2,700 in financial funds plus the cost of a return ticket to get your working holiday visa for Australia.

Therefore, for this trip, we recommend a total additional budget of around £4,200. Though you'll have the chance to earn money in Australia and recoup some of the money spent travelling the east coast between Cairns and Sydney.

And you can rework this itinerary to bring the costs down, if you're on a lower budget.

Singapore 3 night stopover

The flight from the UK to Australia is a long one! Almost 24hrs to be precise.

That's why we recommend breaking up the journey along the way. And Singapore is the perfect place to make that stop.

Spend three nights here to enjoy some independent sightseeing. You could visit Marina Bay Sands to take in the views from the SkyPark Observation Deck before wandering the futuristic Gardens by the Bay with dinner in the vibrant Chinatown.

Next you could spend a day at Sentosa Island where you can relax on the beaches or visit Universal Studios for some thrilling rides. For more delicious food, head to Little India. After enjoying the sights for a few days, jump back on the plane for the final leg of your journey to Australia and the start of your working holiday Down Under.

We've included a stopover in Singapore, but there are plenty of other cities to choose from. If you wanted to stick to Asia, you could opt instead for a few nights in Hong Kong, Malaysia or Bangkok. Alternatively, you could break up the journey with a stopover in Dubai or Qatar. Just let us know your preference and we'll do the rest.

Cairns Skydive and snorkel

Welcome to Australia and the start of your working holiday adventure!

You'll be arriving into the city of Cairns, located in tropical Far North Queensland and the perfect starting point for your trip down the east coast of Australia.

Enjoy three nights here in a popular hostel with some incredible activities thrown in. A gap year isn't complete without at least one wild adrenaline-pumping activity, so we've included a 15,000 ft tandem skydive over Mission Beach. It's Australia’s highest jump with up to 60 seconds of freefall.

We've also included a 3-day snorkelling package on the Great Barrier Reef. You'll spend two nights on a boat with extensive snorkelling on 16 exclusive sites. These sites have been selected for their extravagance of marine life and excellent visibility. You’ll see some of the best the reef has to show, including Milin Reef, Thetford Reef and Flynn Reef.

Cairns to Sydney Explore the East Coast of Australia

Once you've had your fun in Cairns, it's time to put your included 30-day bus and 10-night accommodation package to use and explore the East Coast of Australia independently.

With an East Coast Whimit + Bed Hopper Pass up your sleeve, you can hit the road at your leisure, while enjoying superior and secure accommodation at any Nomads and participating affiliate hostel around Australia.

Providing the ultimate flexibility, not only do you gain passage on Australia’s most extensive coach network, but you also get to unwind at one of the best hostel providers in Australia.

You can pick where you stop along the journey to Sydney, but there are a few spots we recommend. Starting with Townsville, where you can visit Magnetic Island - known for its stunning beaches and wildlife, including koalas.

Airlie Beach is a must, as it's the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands where you can take a sailing trip to see the famous Whitehaven Beach and the stunning Heart Reef.

Next up should be K'gari (previously known as Fraser Island). It's the world's largest sand island and offers unique experiences like 4x4 beach excursions, swimming in freshwater lakes and spotting dolphins.

Every Aussie East Coast adventure should include Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Byron Bay. In Brisbane you can enjoy the vibrant city life and party hard on the Gold Coast, while at Byron Bay you can unwind.

Sydney Start your working holiday Down Under

After a few weeks travelling down the East Coast of Australia, it's time to begin your new life Down Under.

We've included the 1-year Australia working holiday visa and an arrival Work and Travel package in Sydney to help you settle in and find a job.

During your first week in Sydney, all your accommodation, transport, activities as well as some meals are covered. You'll explore the city’s most iconic places all whilst getting setup for your working holiday in Australia. Your first week is jam packed with information, activities and inclusions and will introduce you to new friends from all over the world.

Enjoy city walks, surf lessons, a trip to the Blue Mountains and group dinners while taking advantage of the included job support, training advice and access to a fully integrated labour hire job agency placing thousands of jobs each year.

Sydney is a great choice for a working holiday, but if you'd rather work in Melbourne, no problem! We can swap the flight from the UK to get you to Melbourne and start your Work and Travel package there instead (with the same inclusions).

You can stay for a year on the standard visa, but there's also the opportunity to extend to up to three years in total, so who knows where this year away will take you?!
